Orphaned Web Pages

Priority: Low

Impact: Negative

What issues it may cause

The pages may be discovered by search engines in non-anchor link types such as canonical tags, but may rank less effectively if they do not have any anchor links from other pages. They are less likely to be selected as a canonical URL, and more likely to be deduplicated where the page is in a set of duplicates.

How do you fix it

The pages should be reviewed to determine if they have value for search engines, and internal links to the orphaned pages should be added on other pages.

The valuable pages are likely to be linked, so the orphan pages may also be URLs which are not expected to be linked with anchors, but were found through a link such as a malformed canonical tag URL or hreflang.

What is the positive impact

The pages are more likely to be crawled and indexed, and selected as a canonical URL.
